Father of three survives when van crushed by scrap metal in FL

A Florida driver is lucky to be alive after a piece of flying metal debris barely missed killing him.

The Florida HIghway Patrol says a semi truck carrying scrap metal had overturned on the overpass above. Meanwhile, a 2003 Pontiac van driven by Jesus Armando Escobar, 36, of Orlando was westbound on the exit ramp from I-4 to eastboung S.R. 528.

"Another foot to the left and he would be dead", Florida Highway Patrol Sgt. Kim Montes told People magazine, referring to Escobar.

The force of the impact completely crushed the driver side roof of the van, troopers said.

Amazingly, the van's driver suffered only minor injuries.

"He's a father to three small children and he's our miracle", she said in a statement.

Truck driver Antonio Santiago Wharton was driving on an overpass Saturday morning when he lost control of his vehicle, a Mack truck loaded down with scrap metal, while negotiating a curve.

Wharton was ticketed for careless driving, troopers say.
