Communal violence over cow protection must be curbed sternly: Modi

As the Monsoon Session of the Parliament began on Monday, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said that her party will play an aggressive role.

He alleged that some political parties were portraying cow protection as a communal issue to gain political mileage, which is detrimental to the country's secular fibre.

Modi invoked Gandhi, saying, "He would have shown us what a true gau rakshak is".

Voting to elect the new President is also scheduled for the same day, in which 776 members of Parliament will cast their ballot.

Parliament Affairs Minister Ananth Kumar also has convened an all-party meeting to seek their support for smooth functioning of Parliament. The PM asked all parties to collectively fight hooliganism by cow vigilantes and said all State governments should take stringent action against anti-social elements perpetrating violence.

Besides these, he said, the Congress will also raise issues pertaining to farmers' distress and Mandsaur police firing in both houses of the Parliament. "All governments should take stringent action against those violating law in the name of cow protection".

Modi had spoken against cow vigilantes earlier as well. The government has closed all doors for dialogue on Kashmir "which has led to political suffocation in the valley", Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad said.

"Every issue that affects national security and national interest is a matter of concern for each one of the 125 crore Indians". The meeting will take place at the Parliament library building. He said opposition parties will seek a discussion on the India-China standoff in Dokalam.
