The boat, a Correct Craft Ski Ski Nautique, was traveling at around 30mph when it threw the passengers off. Steuben County Sheriff's Department officers also alerted people on shore to move their docked boats and to clear the area because the unmanned boat kept moving closer to docks and other boats as it circled around and around by the shoreline, conservation officers reported. The boat struck a dock and diverted it's direction into the rear of the patrol boat Carlile was operating, disabling the patrol boat's motor due to the impact.

Conservation Officer Jake Carlile launched a DNR's Boston Whaler patrol boat to try to stop the runaway boat, conservation officers said.

The entangling rope eventually slowed the runaway boat. A DNR statement said an initial report to conservation officers indicated four injured, but the exact number of people injured has not been confirmed. Carlile was able to use a nearby personal watercraft and jump onto the runaway boat while both boats were still in motion.

The Indiana officer who finally brought an out-of-control boat to a stop said the incident shows just how risky drunken boating can be.
