Two Ukrainian tourists killed in stabbing attack at Egyptian resort

Two Ukrainian tourists have been killed and four other tourists wounded by an attacker with a knife at an Egyptian Red Sea holiday resort, Egypt's Interior Ministry and security sources said today.

Assailants killed five Egyptian policemen in a shooting south of Cairo on Friday, in the latest of a series of attacks targeting the country´s security forces, the interior ministry said.

Before Friday's attack, Egyptian tourism chiefs expected the number of tourists visiting the country to approach levels last seen before its 2011 uprising.

Iraq declared victory in Mosul this week after a almost nine-month battle that ravaged the city and took a heavy toll on residents and security forces. Later, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Pavlo Klimkin tweeted that no Ukrainian citizens were among the victims in the Hurghada attack.

A spokesman for Thomas Cook, which has customers in Hurghada, said: "Thomas Cook is aware of a knife attack that has taken place on the beach in Hurghada in Egypt".

As with the beach stabbing, there has not yet been any claim of responsibility for the attack. "He has been arrested and is now being questioned by police to know his reasons".

Two German tourists died of their wounds while four others were hurt, including citizens of Ukraine and the Czech Republic, officials said.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility.

Egyptian authorities say the man has been arrested. Earlier this week, the ministry said police had killed six IS militants in a shootout in southern Egypt.

This seaside resort on the Red sea is very popular with european tourists.

The 28-year-old suspect from Kafr Al-Sheikh province in the Nile Delta, north of Cairo, has been transferred to the capital for questioning.

Egypt has experienced an uptick in violence over recent months, with Coptic Christians the target of most of the attacks.
