Muguruza beats 'role model' Williams for 1st Wimbledon title

Muguruza beats 'role model' Williams for 1st Wimbledon title

But in her second, at the French Open a year ago, Muguruza again faced Serena - and won.

It is Muguruza's second major title, adding to the French Open crown she won a year ago, and makes her the first Spanish woman to win the singles here since her coach Conchita Martinez in 1994.

With her commanding and eventually lopsided victory over 37-year-old Venus, Muguruza became the only female on the planet to have taken a Slam off both Williams siblings, after last year defeating Serena in the French Open final.

For Williams, it is her ninth Wimbledon final as she goes for her sixth win. Throughout the past two years, Muguruza has showed flashes of the player she was expected to become after that Wimbledon loss. I really felt when I achieved the final in 2015, and I won the French Open, I could feel the difference between winning a Grand Slam and not winning.

Venus Williams and Roger Federer have proved this week that they still have plenty of good tennis left to play as each reached yet another Wimbledon final. I know how hard you work. But I know it's hard.

Geomagnetic Storm Watch Issued, Northeast Could Be In For Northern Lights Show
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration announced a moderate geomagnetic storm watch for July 16 and 17. If the Kp levels reach 6 and 7, that is when New England and even Boston can have an opportunity to see the lights.

"I just wanna win, no matter who is in front of me", she later said in a TV interview. And on the second, she sent a return long.

Her own serve worked beautifully, though, and even when it was put under pressure in the 10th game of the final she rallied to save two set points.

"When I had those set points against me, I'm like, 'Hey, it's normal". I wanted to change that.

He has won every set he's played in six matches, and while he did not exactly dominate against the 11th-seeded Berdych, Federer was never in much trouble.

It's like she had tunnel vision and was literally just playing the ball and not another human being across the net. "I mean, she played top tennis, so I have to give her credit for just playing a better match". More recently, she also has been the focal point of a police investigation into a fatal auto crash in Florida.

She joined the elite list comprising of Debbie Hockley, Janette Brittin, Charlotte Edwards, and Belinda Clarke. If New Zealand win and Australia beat South Africa by a big margin, they could also move to the third spot.

Wimbledon should avoid rain as the Championships draw to a close for 2017 on Sunday, with the men's Final the headline act. I think it was very, very tough in the first set.

Last week Florida police said Williams was acting lawfully when she drove her sports utility vehicle into an intersection before a fatal crash with another auto on June 9.

"One of my best friends, Taylor Johnson, her mentor is Billie Jean King".

The resurgent former world No 1 opened the match with a 175kmh ace down the middle and clinched her first service game with a venomous backhand-down-the-line victor. I came thinking, I'm prepared, I feel good.

Williams hit five double-faults, three in one game and once to get broken to begin the second set. That being said, serving it out at 5-0 was proving to be a challenge with the third and final match point being decided on a challenge. "I tried my best to do the things you do - but I think there will be other opportunities". It took me a while actually to calm down, to say, Hey, it's grass, you have to adapt to the surface. A 6-0 final set is not acceptable. "I believe I can".

But when Williams first started playing her sport, fame was new, unfamiliar and nearly unexpected. But when she did get her hands on some serious cash, she didn't quite know what to do with it.

Knowing the Muguruza we've seen over the past two weeks, we ought not to have been so complacent.
