Sprint launches new leasing options for cost-conscious consumers

The changes come at a time when the US wireless market is becoming increasingly competitive, and carriers are battling each other to lure customers through new deals.

When you upgrade, though, most carriers have two plans and want you to pick one: installments to own the phone or monthly fees to lease the phone.

Sprint is the only carrier that leases devices to customers, said Roger Entner, an analyst at Recon Analytics. But the latest annual upgrade offerings allow customers to also now choose from all the smartphones the company sells from Samsung, LG, ZTE, HTC, Kyocera, BlackBerry and other phone makers.

When you're upgrading to a new device, it can be hard to know if it's a device you'll want to keep for a few years, especially if you haven't held it and played with it yet.

Basically, you're now able to "enjoy" your new phone before deciding to upgrade, continue leasing, return or own it outright with minimal upfront costs. "Sprint Deals goes one step further, giving price-conscious consumers incredible offers and the option to upgrade to the latest phones every year". After 12 consecutive on-time monthly payments, Sprint Deals customers are eligible for an annual upgrade to a new phone.

Customers who prefer to bypass a credit check with Sprint, can get an instant discount on the same "value menu" of smartphones, on a Sprint Forward prepaid plan: For entry-level mobile phones, customers get 50 percent off the suggested retail price. All lease payments already made will count toward the purchase price.

Sprint DealsEvery customer, every day, regardless of credit or budget, can access a great deal with simplified pricing and no guesswork.

With Sprint Deals, customers that receive credit from Sprint can pay $25 down and $5 per month for entry-level devices or $30 down and $10 per month for higher-end devices. Also included for a limited time is a fifth line for free.
