Canada's Trudeau warns against 'tempting shortcuts' in NAFTA renegotiations

Trudeau met with 35 US governors on Friday, July 14, and urged them to press for open trade policies as President Donald Trump's administration prepares to reopen potentially contentious negotiations over the North American Free Trade Agreement.

Canada's Prime Minister took the opportunity to take on the Trump Administration on the issue of free-trade during his visit to Providence for the Summer Meeting of the National Governors Association. Vice-President Mike Pence promised a collaborative approach in a speech to the governors.

Pence, who also spoke to the Governors Association, alluded only briefly to the NAFTA talks in his remarks, which focused on this week's healthcare reform bill proposed by Senate Republicans.

"NAFTA isn't ideal. No such agreement ever is", Trudeau said "We think it should be updated and modernized, as it has been a dozen times over the past quarter century". "We are looking forward to bringing NAFTA into the future in a way that will equally benefit both our countries". NAFTA, Trudeau said, has only benefitted the entire continent.

"I am optimistic that this important trade, which leads to millions of good jobs on both sides of the border, will continue", Trudeau said.
