NAN reports that by resolution 45/216 of December 1990, the UN General Assembly chose to continue observing World Population Day to enhance awareness of population issues, including their relations to the environment and development. It has inspired by a public interest in Five Billion Day on which the world's population reached five billion people, on July 11, 1987. Organized by the Government of the United Kingdom, together with UNFPA and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the London Summit on Family Planning is bringing together governments, institutions and stakeholders to move towards the goal of enabling 120 million additional women to gain access to modern contraception by 2020. Now, it's over half that, measuring at about 7.6 billion. It is also central to Women's empowerment and gender equality, and it is a key factor in decreasing poverty growth.
