Quiet Success For China At G20 As Xi Avoids Drama And Spotlight


The resolve was expressed during a meeting between US President Donald Trump with his Chinese counterpart on the sidelines of the G20 summit in the German city of Hamburg.

He added: "As far as North Korea is concerned, we will have, eventually, success".

The President also addressed trade issues before his meeting with Xi.

During talks with Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on the sidelines of the Group of 20 summit in Hamburg, Germany, Trump raised the issue of the US trade deficit with Japan and the importance of ensuring "mutual market access" between the two countries, according to a senior Japanese official.

Potentially the biggest test was Xi's meeting with Trump, who in the run-up to Hamburg had voiced frustration over China's inability to rein in its troublesome erstwhile ally, North Korea.

He also called for concerted efforts on such affairs as the China visit by the chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff in August, the first dialogue between the joint staffs of the two countries' militaries in November, and the Chinese navy's participation in the U.S. -led 2018 Pacific Rim military drill. Independent trade negotiations between the two countries are a possibility as Britain exits the European Union - a move Trump has supported.
