Referring to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's series of allegations against Governor Keshri Nath Tripathi, the veteran Left leader said a clash between the constitutional head and the administrative head in the state would only fuel the unwanted polarisation.

Yadav said a governor is the representative of the President and should not conduct himself in such a manner.

Rajnath Singh called up Mamata and Tripathi separately and took stock of the situation in the riot-hit area. "The way he spoke to me over the phone was so humiliating and insulting".

The statement further added, "True that the Chief Minister has been democratically elected by the people but it should not be forgotten that the Governor is also appointed by the President on recommendation of a democratically elected Union Government".

The paramilitary personnel would assist the local police in containing the situation.
