Villagers begin to mourn dead after deadly China landslide

Authorities reduced the number of people reported dead from 15 to 10 and the missing from 118 to 93, saying that some who had been unaccounted for earlier had been traced. We rushed out and saw massive smoke.

Rescuers scouring through hundreds of tonnes of rubble today pulled out at least 10 bodies with 93 others still missing and chances of their survival bleak, a day after a massive landslide buried a mountain village in China's southwest Sichuan province.

"Every single family has been impacted by the landslide, it's terrible", said Sun Danxian, from a neighbouring village who was walking through the site.

The landslide swept over more than 60 homes as dawn broke in Xinmo, a remote village in north Sichuan province.

"It's just very bad. They had no idea what was coming", said Ms Yang, who is in her 40s.

"As we ran for safety, we looked this way and saw the village flattened", she said.

Eighteen million cubic meters of debris - enough to fill 7,200 Olympic-sized swimming pools - slid 1,250 meters downhill at a 55- to 60-degree angle straight at the village, said Pei Xiangjun, a geological disaster expert at the Ministry of Land and Resources. He said they struggled against the water until they met medical workers who took them to a hospital.

Landslides are a frequent danger in rural and mountainous parts of China, particularly after heavy rains.
