Officer injured in skirmish at SF's downtown Westfield mall

A large brawl erupted in the Westfield mall in San Francisco Sunday evening, forcing it to close its doors and leaving one officer injured as he tried to stop the violence, police said.

The first officers to arrive called for backup, Officer Robert Rueca said.

One video shows an officer swinging what appears to be a nightstick at a young man, while several of his colleagues nearby struggle to subdue another person.

To help control the situation the mall was closed.

San Fransisco police received calls around 6:45 PM PST about fights at the mall, with dozens of officers responding.

Several officers suffered minor injuries while breaking up the brawl.

Police did not immediately disclose the details of what happened, but dozens of officers remained outside the mall on Market and Fifth streets at 8 p.m., at least an hour after the incident.

The brawl started between about two dozen people in the food court and grew from there, police said.

The affray took place after Sunday's Gay Pride Parade, but police said they do not believe the incident involved a hate crime.
