No Eid dinner at white house


After the solemn prayers, people joyfully greeted each other with a embrace and "Eid mubarak" in mosques, homes and public places.

Bush hosted the dinner annually throughout his tenure as president, including just after the 9/11 attacks.

This is the first time in almost two decades that the White House in the United States has not recognised the holy month of Ramadan with either an Iftar dinner or Eid celebrations. Typically, a White House hosted iftar - the Islamic term for the meal - would be attended by diplomats from Muslim countries as well as members of Congress.

US President Donald Trump has broken a almost 20-year-old tradition by failing to host a dinner marking the end of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

President Barack Obama hosted his first Ramadan dinner in 2009 and subsequently every year of his Presidency. It was signed by Donald Trump and Melania Trump but was not shared on POTUS social media handles.

The billionaire businessman-turned-politician issued a brief statement at the weekend which offered "warm greetings" to Muslims celebrating Eid al-Fitr, which marks the close of Ramadan, Islam's holy month of fasting.

Portions of the statement read: "We pray that as you break the fast you continue to seek Allah's guidance and blessings not only for our families, friends and communities but for the good of Ghana so we can forge ahead as a people in peace and tranquillity".

A State Department spokesperson told Reuters it was "still exploring possible options for observance of Eid al-Fitr ..."

The White House on Saturday had released a short statement from Trump and the first lady recognising the holiday.

The Premier added that the fasting associated with Ramadan encourages mental and physical commitment to the faith and also enables families and communities to connect with one another and renew values sacred to Islam.

"This local militant group robbed us the chance to observe Ramadhan peacefully and stole from us the opportunity to celebrate Eid'l Fitr and be with our loved ones in this religious occasion". After the presidential order was temporarily blocked by two federal appeals courts, the USA supreme court is considering the Trump administration's appeal.

The demands regarding Al-Jazeera, the Doha-based satellite broadcaster, state that Qatar must also shut down all affiliates. A list of 13 orders has been drawn up by Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt and Bahrain.


Muslims believe they are commanded by God, as mentioned in the Qur'an, to continue their fast until the last day of Ramadaan and pay the Zakat and fitra before offering the Eid prayers.
