NJ college: Professor fired for racially insensitive remarks

A New Jersey community college has fired an adjunct professor after officials say she made racially insensitive comments on Fox News.

"The college was immediately inundated with feedback from students, faculty and prospective students and their families expressing frustration, concern and even fear that the views expressed by a college employee (with influence over students) would negatively impact their experience on the campus", newly appointed Essex County College President Anthony Munroe said in a statement, according to NJ.com.

Essex County College president Anthony Munroe, citing an onslaught of complaints after Lisa Durden's June 6 cable-news clash, affirmed the Newark school's support for free speech - but concluded "racism can not be fought with more racism". Discussing a Black Lives Matter Memorial Day event that was only open to black people, Durden dismissed host Tucker Carlson's concerns, mocking saying "boo hoo hoo" while adding that "white people are angry because you couldn't use your white privilege card".

Host Tucker Carlson asked her if seemingly segregating by race was contradictory, considering the goals of the Black Lives Matter movement.

"Boo hoo hoo. You white people are angry because you couldn't use your white privilege card", she told Carlson.

The show aired June 6, and the school suspended Durden with pay two days later.

Durden said the school "publically lynched" her.

"I thought it would be a safe place for me", she told the paper, referring to the college. She also said that, contrary to Monroe's assertions, she had received an outpouring of support from students and faculty members. Farber says that they can't legally prevent their employees from speaking out. "The character of this institution mandates that we embrace diversity, inclusion, and unity", he explained.

"In consideration of the college's mission, and the impact that this matter has had on the college's fulfillment of its mission, we can not maintain an employment relationship with the adjunct", Munroe stated.

According an Associated Press report, Essex County College has fired adjunct professor Lisa Durden for the comments she made while on Carlson's show.

Durden's lawyer, Leslie Farber, said that Durden may have had her rights to free speech violated, and that they were considering legal action.
