Federal Bureau of Investigation probing MI airport stabbing as terrorism

The FBI is the "lead agency" in the investigation, according to a statement by state police. He added that it was clear the Ftouhi had a 'hatred for the U.S'.

The FBI official said the suspect appeared to be a "lone wolf" attacker.

Minister of Public Safety Ralph Goodale issued a statement condemning the attack as "heinous and cowardly". The probe will progress with the help of their Canadian counterparts, it added.

A law enforcement officer subdued Ftouhi, who asked the officer why he did not kill him, the complaint said. The FBI also said Ftouhi yelled "Allahu akbar" as he allegedly stabbed Neville.

Neville is in satisfactory condition.

Ftouhi is being charged with violence at an global airport, which carries a penalty of up to 20 years in prison.

Ftouhi faces charges of committing an act of violence at an airport, and is expected to appear at a federal court in Flint.

The FBI said the man made references during the attack to people being killed in Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan. "Lt. Neville got him to stop stabbing him".

He stabbed Lt. Jeff Neville in the neck before being taken into custody, police said. He was hospitalized and is in a stable condition. The investigation is ongoing as a part of a joint operation with Canada, officials said.

"The airport is closed".

Gelios said that an investigation is under way into the attack, noting that Canada is cooperating in assembling evidence with an eye toward determining what links Ftouhi might have with the USA northern neighbor.

David Gelios, FBI Chief Investigator revealed that Ftouhi entered the United States on June 16.

White House press secretary Sean Spicer said President Donald Trump was briefed on the stabbing by Homeland Security Adviser Tom Bossert. For about 40 minutes he lingered in the airport's public areas - including a restaurant and a bathroom where he dropped his bags - before the attack, a criminal complaint said.

Gelios said Ftouhi was the only suspect.

Ftouhi legally entered the United States from Lake Champlain, New York, on June 16 before making his way to Flint, Mr Gelios said.

There was no interaction between the suspect and the officer before the stabbing, Gelios said, describing the knife used as 30 centimeters long with a serrated blade about 20 centimeters long. Neville retired from that department as a lieutenant.
