Couple catch teen falling from ride

A group of men banded together to catch her, while another climbed a tree to remove branches which were impeding their rescue effort.

In a rescue caught on video by witness Loren Lent, the teen slips out from the 2-person vehicle she was sharing with a relative and momentarily dangles 25-feet in the air.

He saw the girl - a resident of Greenwood, Delaware, who has not been identified - clinging to the ride and to a younger relative also in the vehicle.

Officials later inspected the ride and said it was in proper working order - but it remains closed while a thorough review is completed.

"Looking at her today knowing she was alright because of me and my daughter, made it worth it", Howard said.

It's not clear yet how she slipped under the safety bar.

The incident, captured on video, shows the unnamed teen dangling from the stopped ride above a crowd of spectators, park authorities and police.

He looked up to see a girl dangling about eight metres off the ground from a slow-moving gondola ride. He estimates that it took another five minutes after the vehicle stopped before she let go.

When she did eventually fall the nearly eight metres to the ground, she landed almost completely on one man, Matthew Howard Sr, who was treated for a back injury in the aftermath.

Six Flags closed the ride afterwards to investigate how she became stuck.

"I just couldn't stand there", he said.

Witnesses first spotted the girl hanging from the chair by her arms and head.

When asked about safety procedures at the park, Hansen said all rides have a standard evacuation plan.

The park said in a statement that the safety of guests was a top priority.

The Sky Ride is described as "a mellow-paced ride with an awesome view", reaching heights of more than 20 feet, according to the Great Escape website.

"I couldn't let that little girl die", he told the AP.

Winchell, who is applying to be a nurse, said she and her father visited the girl on Sunday at the hospital and she was in good spirits.
