Canada nurse gets life for killing 8 people in her care

Before being sentenced to life behind bars for 14 crimes, including the murders of eight vulnerable patients in her care, the 50-year-old mass murderer addressed the court briefly after the loved ones of her victims spoke out.

The crown and her defense lawyer have suggested that Wettlaufer will serve her sentences concurrently. "Sorry is too small a word".

Wettlaufer was described by the judge on Monday as a "shadow of death" that passed over her victims, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp (CBC) reported. By then she would be 75, and it was indicated she "may never be parolled".

Ontario Superior Court Justice Bruce Thomas said Wettlaufer was a "predator" who took the lives of those she was supposed to protect and care for during her time as a nurse, CBC reports.

She attempted to murder Wayne Hedges, 57, Michael Priddle, 63, Sandra Towler, 77, and Beverly Bertram, 68.

Arpad Horvath, whose father was also killed by Wettlauffer while in her care, said the former nurse's statement in court only made him angry. The killings happened between 2007 and 2014 at three provincial long-term care homes and a private facility.

"On behalf of the Ontario government, we want to express our deepest condolences to the victims, their families and the communities in Woodstock and London and the surrounding areas", the statement added.
