Israel starts work on new settlement amid U.S. peace push

According to a senior-level White House official, Kushner and Greenblatt arrived in Israel this week in an attempt to advance the peace process with the Palestinians.

His platform made no mention of an independent Palestinian state, and his inner circle includes strong supporters of the settlement movement.

Trump administration officials have said that if they are going to make progress on the Israel-Palestinian conflict, they do not want to get bogged down in process but to move more rapidly toward resolving what are known as "final status" issues, the complexities around Jerusalem, Palestinian refugees, water resources, security and borders.

Nabil Abu Rdainah, a spokesman for Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, called the ground-breaking "a grave escalation and an attempt to foil efforts by the American administration to revive negotiations, especially [before] the arrival of the USA envoys".

Israel disputes that, citing biblical, historical and political links to the West Bank, as well as security interests.

Also on Tuesday, Greenblatt prayed at the Western Wall, the holiest site in Judaism, along with paying a condolence call to an Israeli soldier killed in an attack on Friday.

But Israel has continued to provide limited power to Gaza, paid for by the Palestinians, to prevent a humanitarian crisis on its doorstep and out of concern that more instability could lead to renewed fighting.

The U.S. Embassy said the visit was private and gave no further details.

Talks are in an advanced stage to allow Palestinians making the Muslim hajj pilgrimage to fly from Israel to Saudi Arabia, with a brief layover in Jordan but without having to change planes, Israel's Ynet news website reported, citing an unidentified senior Israeli official.

US Navy to hold Japan memorial for sailors killed in crash
The collision occurred at around 1:30 a.m. local time but was not reported by the freighter's crew until around 2:25 a.m. The US Navy, the US Coast Guard , and Japanese naval and maritime authorities are all conducting investigations.
