Virginia Democratic and Republican gubernatorial primary election results

Mr. Perriello became the latest Bern victim, notching another loss for the senator from Vermont who electrified Democratic voters past year but who has struggled to turn his movement into a winning electoral campaign.

Perriello pledged in his concession speech to help Northam and said his campaign had shown that a "movement" is "rising up".

"There is one word you will never hear from me, and that's unity", Stewart says.

Northam essentially had been campaigning for years, making key contacts with influential power brokers like prominent African-American politicians and religious leaders, and building up a large cash advantage that let him outspend Perriello on TV advertising in the closing weeks of the race.

Gillespie is backed by most of the state party establishment and has focused on pocketbook issues, including proposing a modest cut to the state's income tax rate. State Sen. Frank W. Wagner was carrying the remaining votes.

Now the transfer gods have smiled down on the Premier League once again, with Alves set to join Man City for absolutely nothing. They won three La Liga titles and two Champions Leagues titles together during their four seasons together at Camp Nou.

Stewart proudly flew the Confederate flag at his rallies and showed up often in Charlottesville, where local officials want to remove a statue of Robert E. Lee from the city's downtown. "I commend him, and we agreed that we're going to bring all Democrats under the tent starting tonight".

He promises "to continue the revolution that Donald Trump started".

Associated Press reporters Ben Finley in Norfolk, Jessica Gresko in Arlington, and Alanna Durkin Richer in Richmond contributed to this report. Perriello's last-minute entry into the race earlier this year forced Northam to ratchet up his campaign much sooner than expected to take on Perriello's challenge from his left flank.

Perriello called Northam a "good public servant and a good man".

Frank Von Richter said he voted for Northam because he likes that the lieutenant governor is more "middle of the road" than Perriello and thinks he will work better with a Republican-controlled General Assembly.

Virginia is one of only two states electing governors this year, and the contest is in a swing state that Hillary Clinton won in November.

"I am running for governor to take back Virginia from the establishment and political elites in Richmond", conservative Republican candidate Corey Stewart said on his campaign website. Northam faced former Rep. Tom Perriello in today's primary.

Ralph Northam, the lieutenant governor, who is endorsed by all of the state's biggest political figures including Governor Terry McAuliffe and Senators Tim Kaine and Mark Warner, won a convincing victory over progressive former congressman Tom Perriello who had been championed by the party's left.

Sen. Jill Vogel (R-27th) edged out opponents Bryce Reeves and Glenn Davis Jr. for the Republican lieutenant governor nomination with 42.3 percent of the vote. He eked out a win over Prince William County Board of Supervisors Chairman Corey Stewart and state Sen.

But even with the state's Republican Party and news organizations of all stripes calling the race for Gillespie, Stewart declared the contest "too close to call" at his Woodbridge victory party Tuesday night. Gillespie, a former state and national party chairman, is widely seen as the person to beat Tuesday after leading consistently in polls of likely GOP primary voters.

When exactly is the first day of summer?
The summer solstice, despite popular belief, is actually the point at which Earth is farthest from the sun and not closest. The summer solstice, which falls between spring and autumn, starts June 20 and lasts until September 23.

Northam beat opponent Tom Perriello, a one-time US representative for Virginia's 5th district, with roughly 55 percent of the vote statewide. Northam raised almost $6.5 million in the primary compared to Perriello's $4 million haul, which helped the lieutenant governor saturate Washington-area television stations with ads over the last few weeks. You'll be asked for your choice of ballot when you check in at your polling place Tuesday.
