Lucy Hale called herself 'fat' on Instagram and her fans aren't happy

On Father's Day, your social media feed was probably filled with people's reflections on their dads.

The Instagram throwback photos were in full force over the weekend as celebrities (and non-celebs!) posted sweet Father's Day messages.

Because Pretty Little Liars has such a young fan base, commenters anxious that the statement could negatively affect the way her young followers view themselves. Regardless of the reason for her comment, it's important to remember that "fat" is an adjective that doesn't say anything about an individual's beauty or value.

Writing alongside an old photo of herself with her Dad, she commented, "You taught me to have soul".

Others, though, are defending Lucy, saying she has insecurities just like everyone else. "Think about THEM before you post". Back in 2012, she told Cosmopolitan: "I've never really talked about this, but I would go days without eating".

First up, the "ugh" implies that being "fat" is a negative thing, and that she was disgusted with the previous pic of herself. People undergo weight changes throughout their lives, and that's perfectly OK. As Refinery29 pointed out, fat is a body descriptor, not an insult.

"Fat"? You look a healthy size. "You were so lovely and you're handsome now". That implies that fat people are not lovely, and there's a difference between being fat and being pretty. The body-positivity movement has opened up many people's minds to what is handsome. She's a skinny bitch, this one. "We know you were sick and it's hard", said one commenter, most likely referencing the eating disorder.

Body-shaming in any form is not OK, whether you're shaming someone for being over or underweight. "If she feels or felt insecure, she has a right to say it".
