Georgia inmates credited with saving life of guard during work detail

But six inmates worked together to save the security officer, who asked not to be identified, while they were maintaining the lawns at a local graveyard. "They really stepped up in a time of crisis and they showed it".

Six of the inmates he was guarding are now being hailed as "heroes" by the Sherrif's Office for immediately jumping into action to get the officer help.

Meanwhile, one of them called 911 with the officer's phone.

The sheriff's office expressed their gratitude to the inmates in a heartfelt message.

The incident came the same week two other Georgia inmates escaped by allegedly killing two prison guards before being captured in Tennessee.

"As we watched the horrific manhunt this week of the two inmates that killed two correctional officers, we all know that Monday could have ended differently for our officer", the sheriff's office posted on Facebook.

The inmates are being treated to homemade lunch and desserts prepared by the officer's family.

"When that happened, in my opinion, it wasn't about who is in jail and who wasn't", he said.

The inmates then promptly removed his outer carrier vest in order to help him cool off.
