Cavaliers part ways with general manager David Griffin

It was truly remarkable what Griffin accomplished in his three years as GM, completely overhauling a roster while building Cleveland's first championship team in franchise history.

The story of how David Griffin lost his job as Cleveland Cavaliers general manager is one that happens in businesses across America: He wanted more money and more power, and his boss said no.

The Cavs thanked Griffin for his leadership and many contributions during his stint as GM, including his role in the franchise's first National Basketball Association title. Billups has a replationship with Cavaliers' owner Dan Gilbert and head coach Tyronn Lue.

The Cavs and GM David Griffin are parting ways, as first reported by ESPN's Brian Windhorst.

Griffin's departure was announced just hours after numerous reports surfaced that IN had contacted the Cavs about a possible trade for small forward Paul George, who will be an unrestricted free agent following the 2017-18 season and has reportedly told the Pacers he will not re-sign with them. "We got us 1 (trophy)".

- Griffin was paid just less than $2 million annually on a contract set to expire after this month and wasn't promoted after helping the Cavs win the National Basketball Association championship a year ago. This could be the latest move that gives James a reason to move on from the Cavs when the time comes. A five-time All-Star and member of the 2004 NBA Champion Detroit Pistons, Billups was named All-NBA Second Team once and All-NBA Third Team twice.

"It makes no sense why he shouldn't get an extension", James told ESPN. Griffin was targeted by Atlanta and Orlando for GM openings, but Gilbert did not grant those teams permission to speak with Griffin during the playoffs. There is an immediate need to fill the position, as free agency begins in early July.
