California mom attacked child in attempted exorcism

A local resident from Humboldt County, California, said that he was "sent by God" to save an 11-year-old girl on Friday who was stripped naked and nearly choked and bitten to death by her mother in an exorcism. One witness, local resident John Marciel, intervened and attempted to physically restrain Felder. Afterwards, as a crowd of around a dozen people watched in shock, Felder reportedly started hitting her daughter in the head with a piece of driftwood and biting her.

Felder was booked on suspicion of attempted homicide, assault with a deadly weapon, felony child abuse and aggravated mayhem.

The child was taken to an area hospital to receive treatment for several injuries, including a severely injured ear, police said.

Marciel eventually called 911, The Associated Press (AP) reported. Allen continued by saying the daughter will shortly be placed in protective child custody.

He said Felder took a toxicology test to determine whether she was under the influence of drugs, but the results have not returned yet.

When deputies with the Humboldt County Sheriff's Office arrived, Fernville told them she had to get "the demons" out of her daughter. As deputies worked to subdue Felder, Marciel tended to the girl, KTLA reported.

Authorities said if it were not for Marciel's heroism and swift actions, the girl could have been killed.

A look at Americans detained in North Korea in recent years
North Korean state media reported that he was arrested for committing "hostile acts" against the government. Both the US and South Korea - North's adversaries - have their citizens trapped in Pyongyang jails.

Investigators planned to forward the case to prosecutors on Monday, Allen said. "The Sheriff's Office will also be requesting that John Marciel be recognized for the Red Cross Life Saving Award", the sheriff's office said. Marciel had made a decision to take some out-of-town visitors to the beach before going to his son's high school graduation.

As for Marciel, he said he was happy that he was there at the time to stop the incident.

"When you see something like this, it shakes your foundation and faith in people", he said.
