U.S. police officer acquited for killing black man

Twitter users questioned the verdict with several people pointing out the jury - comprised of only two black members - made a decision to acquit officer Jeronimo Yanez despite there being a Facebook video of Castile's shooting in the St. Paul suburb of Falcon Heights.

26 people were arrested from both the capitol and freeway protests.

August 24: The St. Anthony Police Department says it put Yanez back on administrative leave after he had briefly returned to limited duty, citing "concerns and other feedback from the community".

Yanez told Castile, "OK, don't reach for it then" and "Don't pull it out".

The video of Castile's death went viral after his girlfriend, Diamond Reynolds, live streamed the aftermath of the shooting on Facebook, seconds after Castile was shot by the officer.

For their part, Yanez's lawyers praised the results and said there shouldn't have been charges in the first place.

Castile's death was one of multiple police-related deaths involving black people that has triggered widespread racial discontent in the United States.

"Mr. Castile's death was a bad tragedy ... Are you kidding me right now?" Police say 21 officers were hurt, none seriously.

Wiley added: "I can not stop crying for you, Philando", and Aduba wrote: "Truth lies somewhere here: until we value & speak for the lives of all people, we remain hinged to this chapter of history".

Outside the courthouse, Castile's mother said Yanez got away with murder.

Castile had a permit for the weapon, and prosecutors questioned whether Yanez ever saw it.

The Castile family, friends, and attorney, Glenda Hatchett had strong words of disapproval for the turnout of the trial which acquitted Jeronimo Yanez of all charges against him.

The death of Philando Castile was sad and according to testimony in the Yanez trial, unnecessary. Therefore, Friday night's large-scale protests in St. Paul were expected in the wake of the verdict.

The system continues to fail black people. He was faced two lesser counts of endangering Reynolds and her daughter for opening fire into the vehicle.

"We must all own the tragedy endured by Mr. Castile's family and community - until Americans demand greater accountability for the discrimination and violence of a drug war prosecuted in their name, it won't be the last".

She says those arrested were booked at Ramsey County Jail on charges including being a pedestrian on the busy freeway. The shooting happened just seconds after Castile informed the officer that he had a gun, which he was licensed to carry. "I'm mad as hell right now, yes, I am", she said.
