Trump Administration Revokes Obama-Era Immigration Program Protecting Immigrant Parents

President Donald Trump will let immigrant children who were brought to the US illegally but received protected status under an Obama administration program to remain in the country, stepping back from his campaign vow to deport so-called Dreamers.

Another Trump campaign promise was fulfilled, however, after his administration canceled a never-implemented program meant to protect parents of US citizens from deportation.

The Trump administration is leaving in place a program protecting hundreds of thousands young immigrants from deportation - one that President Donald Trump had pledged to eliminate.

The other policy, known as Deferred Action for Parents of Americans and Lawful Permanent Residents, or DAPA, was written in 2014 to protect illegal immigrant parents with children who are USA citizens and lawful permanent residents.

"Prior to implementation of DAPA, twenty-six states challenged the policies established in the DAPA memorandum in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Texas", the statement continued. Kelly formally revoked the policy memo that created the program, which mirrored an earlier effort to protect young immigrants in the country illegally from deportation on June 15.

Asked about the administration's decision to end DAPA and maintain DACA, despite the right criticizing both programs as being an amnesty granted by executive order instead of legislative mandate, Kelly said at a news conference here at the closing of a Central American prosperity and security confab that it was a simple move.

Lisa Rivas, a Danbury immigration attorney, said she wasn't surprised about the DAPA announcement because of the Supreme Court decision.

Since taking office in January, the government has said its crackdown will focus on illegal immigrants with criminal records and those linked to violent gangs.

David Leopold, an immigration lawyer, praised the Administration's decision. The attempt to grant amnesty, however, was legally stonewalled in the courts and never took off the ground. DACA allows these young, undocumented immigrants to obtain work permits and drivers licenses, and protects them from deportation. "DACA is a very, very hard subject for me", Trump said in February.

The Trump administration will continue to allow reprieve for immigrants who illegally entered the children. The implementation of DAPA would have applied to an estimated 5 million undocumented immigrants. During his presidential campaign, Trump said former President Barack Obama had "defied federal law and the Constitution", and that he would "immediately terminate" DACA when he became president. He believes the administration said it would "remain in effect" only to clarify that the program, unlike the one for immigrant parents, was at this time not being acted upon by the administration.
