Rep. Steve Scalise upgraded to 'serious' condition following baseball practice shooting

After an initial operation, the congressman was taken to a radiology suite for another procedure to control bleeding.

The Louisiana Republican was reported in critical condition before the surgery.

Sava said that after being released from the hospital, Scalise "will require a period of healing and rehabilitation".

Doctors said it was bad at first, an "imminent risk of death", but the news was better Friday night.

The U.S. Capitol Police said Hodgkinson used a 9 mm handgun and a 7.62-caliber rifle in the shooting, and traces run by investigators showed he evidently acquired the weapons legally.

He went on to say, "We all know what happens and what not, and I can't tell you how they have won the games, I can't name them". Abbas also heavily criticised the English team for blaming the Cardiff pitch for their defeat to Pakistan in the semi-finals.

Scalise is said to be somewhat responding to medical staff and family, according to the doctors.

The round fragmented into hundreds of pieces and did "substantial damage" to bones, internal organs and blood vessels, Sava said.

Doctors say Rep. Steve Scalise (skuh-LEES') remains in critical condition at a Washington hospital but is improving. He died later from injuries sustained in a shootout with police.

US President Donald Trump has called for unity in the wake of the horrific shooting incident in which a top Republican leader was injured, saying that despite differences the devotion to the country brings the people together. He will be in the hospital for some time.

"I understand he was awake on scene but by the time he was transported by helicopter to the MedStar trauma center, he was in shock", Sava said.

"The Scalise family greatly appreciates the outpouring of thoughts and prayers", the statement concludes.

Scalise is only afforded a security detail because he is the third most powerful Republican in the lower chamber, though it's likely that Washington lawmakers will see a beefing up of their security.

Capitol Police Officer Crystal Griner also remains at the MedStar Washington hospital after sustaining a gunshot wound to her ankle, but is in "good condition and good spirits" the hospital said. "435 Members of Congress, and 300 million Americans, are pulling for him, praying for him, and pledging to him our full and total support", he said.

The House Republican baseball team had been practicing for weeks in early mornings at the Alexandria site for Thursday's annual congressional baseball game against Democratic lawmakers' team.
