Paris police shoot attacker near Notre Dame Cathedral

A source close to the investigation said a video in which the attacker pledged allegiance to ISIS had been found in his flat during a police raid on Tuesday evening.

One of the officers fired two shots, wounding the suspect in the chest.

The man cried "This is for Syria!" but said nothing else indicating a motive or a link to extremist groups, Collomb said.

Pictures on social media from inside the cathedral showed people sitting down with their hands in the air apparently at the request of police.

French authorities say a man was shot and injured by the police after he attacked an officer with a hammer outside Paris's Notre Dame Cathedral on June 6. The officer, 22, was also taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to Collomb.

Why history says Theresa May should go
Former Treasury chief George Osborne - who was sacked by May past year - called her a "dead woman walking". But in United Kingdom elections this result does not automatically trigger another election.

Paris prosecutors have opened a counter terrorism investigation after an unidentified assailant attacked police with a hammer outside Notre Dame Cathedral.

About 13 million people visit Notre Dame every year, making it the most visited site in France. Last year, police foiled an attack near the site.

Kyle Riches, a tourist from San Francisco, was with his wife walking through the plaza outside Notre-Dame when they heard gunshots and dropped to the ground. She said that there had been no panic inside the cathedral.

Collomb said the officer's condition is not serious. However, thanks to the high-security alert, a lot of officers were patrolling the streets and the attacker was rendered harmless quickly. He appeared to be acting alone.

The Interior Minister said authorities were working to verify the card's authenticity.

Shiv Sena to recommend Swaminathan's name if BJP not ready for Bhagwat
With the Sena realising how much the BJP needs it for July's presidential polls, the saffron party is pushing for a hard bargain. Shah's visit to Uddhav's residence is politically significant since there was strong opposition to the meeting within BJP.

"The police didn't seem interested in him at the beginning", Metreau said.

Tourists were locked inside the church about 4.30 Tuesday afternoon and hundreds of others were evacuated from the esplanade as police responded to the incident.

Soderberg told the news service that "everyone was very quiet and very scared" as police examined each of the cathedral's pews, but that everything inside the cathedral was calm and orderly.

It may be recalled that France has been in a state of emergency since the attacks by the jihadists in Paris in November 2015 which had left 130 people dead.
