May says security Cabinet to meet after crash


One person has been killed and ten more injured after a white van driver screaming "I'm going to kill all Muslims" ploughed into worshipers near a renowned north London mosque, in the latest terror attack to rock Britain.

"Police have confirmed this is being treated as a potential terrorist attack", Prime Minister Theresa May said.

Britain, especially London, has been on edge over several recent incidents, including last month's terror bombing in Manchester and the recent auto attack and stabbing near London Bridge. I think it's significant that they had the reputation historically of being one of the most militant mosques in London.

There has been an increase in hate crime reports since the Manchester Arena bombing and the London Bridge attack.

Prime Minister Theresa May said she would chair a meeting of the Cobra emergency committee later Monday.

In a statement, The Metropolitan Police said: "Met Police were called just after 0020hrs to reports of a vehicle in collision with pedestrians".

Mr Khan called for increased security outside United Kingdom mosques as a "matter of urgency" after the terror attack, which took place as worshippers attended Ramadan night prayers.

In a statement at 04:46 am they said the incident was being investigated by counter-terrorism police.

Manchester was also hit by a severe attack when a bomber killed more than 20 people at an Ariana Grande concert.

"People were very upset, people were shouting, people were saying, "where's the police, where's the ambulance?' People were saying, 'keep him on the ground", people were asking questions, saying 'why did you do this?' People were laying down on the floor".

Police say the driver of a van that hit pedestrians on a London road is a 48-year-old man who has been arrested and taken to a hospital. The incident, which is now being investigated as a potential terror attack, took place just after midnight on Monday, London time.

Britain has been hit by a series of attacks in recent months, including the van-and-knife attack on London Bridge on 3 June.

"All my thoughts are with the victims, their families and the emergency services on the scene", she said.

Many local Muslim worshippers complained that police did not immediately treat it as a terrorist attack, saying they would have treated the incident differently if it had been an Islamist assault.

The councils secretary general Harun Khan said he expected authorities to step up security "as a matter of urgency", adding many would feel "terrorised" following the incident.

In March, a man plowed a rented SUV into pedestrians on Westminster Bridge, killing four people before stabbing a police officer outside Parliament.

One man, who was already being given first aid at the scene before the vehicle was driven into pedestrians, has died but police said it was not clear whether his death was directly linked.

"People who were inside saw the attacker was smiling, he was waving, he was happy".

"He was sitting and holding him like that, people kept holding him".
