Grenfell Tower relief effort has been effective, insists council leader

London's mayor Sadiq Khan said on Sunday that the Grenfell Tower fire, in which 58 people are presumed dead, was caused by "mistakes and neglect", as he acknowledged growing public frustration and anger.

In a report, BBC said the number could be around 70 people in total.

"I think in the past local residents here have not always been listened to".

Aluminum cladding with insulation sandwiched between two panels has been blamed for helping to spread flames in major fires in many parts of the world, including blazes in the Middle East, Europe, Asia and the United States.

"It was a death trap, and they knew it", one person shouted as demonstrators surged inside the offices of the Kensington and Chelsea council, responsible for managing the social housing block in a working-class enclave of one of Britain's richest districts.

Opposition Labour Party lawmaker David Lammy said that the government and the police should immediately seize all documents relating to the building's renovation to prevent the destruction of evidence that could show criminal wrongdoing. "The bodies of 16 people have been recovered from the building and taken to a mortuary", he added, while the figure of 58 may rise.

Morocco said seven of its nationals were among the dead.

May has come in for a barrage of criticism over her response to the disaster, including being jeered when she visited the North Kensington estate on Friday.

On Saturday afternoon, hundreds of protesters gathered in Whitehall to call for her resignation. Demonstrators gathered outside, protesting about several issues including the fire.

The fire has also been transformed into a symbol of class inequality - the Grenfell Tower's charred remains stand high above one of the British capital's wealthiest neighborhoods. "My government will do whatever it takes to help those affected, get justice and keep our people safe", she said.

Theresa May has also announced a £5m fund which will be made available to pay for emergency supplies, food, clothes and other costs.

The group said her plea to Mrs May that survivors of the atrocity have the final say on what happens with the site in the future was agreed at the meeting. Those who lost their homes will be rehoused within three weeks, she said.

"All I'm keen to say is there is an effective, co-ordinated relief effort on the ground and I'm sorry if people haven't seen that".

"It is hard to escape a very somber national mood", the queen said in a statement to mark her official birthday - an occasion that typically does not result in any public comments from the monarch.

The fire forced residents to flee through black smoke down the single stairwell, jump out of windows or even drop their children from the 120-apartment building.

Mohammed Alhajali, who was 23 and a civil engineering student, was the first victim to be named.

He came to Britain in 2014 with his older brother Omar.

"Mohammad was a very awesome and kind person".

His family said in a statement that Alhajali "came to the United Kingdom because he had ambitions and aims for his life and for his family".
