Georgia race tests nation's divide over Trump presidency

Georgia race tests nation's divide over Trump presidency

Ossoff almost won the first Georgia election earlier this year with a plurality of the vote.

The WSB-Landmark Communications survey showed Democrat Jon Ossoff with 49.7 percent, while GOP Karen Handel has 48 percent; 2.3 percent said they're still undecided ahead of Tuesday's special election.

Operatives in both parties acknowledge that more Republicans have voted early than Democrats - overall, a reason for Handel's campaign to be optimistic and Ossoff's campaign to sweat.

Early voting totals indicated 140,000 people had voted by Saturday in Georgia's special House election, which is considered the most expensive House race in US history.

Ossoff may have raised more money than Handel, but she has the support of President Trump, as well as Price and Agriculture Secretary and former Georgia Governor Sonny Perdue.

Handel and the GOP super PAC Congressional Leadership Fund have worked hard to turn the race away from Trump's leadership in Washington and make it about Ossoff's youth (he is 30) and about the House Democratic leader, Nancy Pelosi.

"This is a race for the heart and soul for America", Perdue said. "They think he can fool you".

The poll comes just days before the special election to fill Secretary of Health and Human Services Tom Price, which is seen largely seen as a referendum on President Trump's presidency.

The seat has been in GOP hands since 1978, having been held by such Republican stalwarts as Newt Gingrich and Johnny Isakson.

But the district is also more conservative than some of the similar-looking targets.

Handel says the Senate can make improvements, but she'd have voted for the House-passed version.

The bill declares that insurers can not deny coverage based on patient history - a point central to Handel's claims.

Ossoff says removing that cost protection makes any coverage guarantee "useless", because policies would become unaffordable, particularly given the Republicans' proposal to roll back premium subsidies that are a primary feature of the 2010 law.
