Democrats win Baseball Game, hand trophy to Republicans in honor of Scalise

Congressional officials insisted that Thursday's charity game proceed as planned, an act of defiance meant to condemn the shooting and show bipartisan support for Scalise, who remained in critical condition at MedStar Washington Hospital Center as the game unfolded.

Eastern time, barely an hour after the first reports of a gunman shooting Rep. Steve Scalise, the House Majority Whip, and four other people practicing for a benefit baseball game. The bullet entered Scalise's left hip and tore through his pelvis, breaking bones, injuring organs and causing severe bleeding.

Scalise underwent a second surgery for internal injuries and a broken leg - his third procedure overall - and remained in critical condition but had shown improvement, MedStar Washington Hospital Center said in a statement on Thursday.

Scalise is sedated, but the husband and father of two has been able to respond to his doctors and family.

Scalise, who has had two surgeries, will need additional operations and will be in the hospital for "a considerable period of time, presumably weeks", Sava said.

The Trump administration will continue to allow reprieve for immigrants who illegally entered the children. The attempt to grant amnesty , however, was legally stonewalled in the courts and never took off the ground.

When Scalise arrived in the hospital, he had an "imminent risk of death" and was "as critical as you can be", doctors also said.

Sava said infection remains a risk.

The mood at the Capitol remained somber Thursday, as members learned more about Scalise's condition and signed giant "get well" posters for him and others injured.

"It's been much more hard than people even thought at the time".

As Scalise continued his grueling recovering, law enforcement officials proceeded with their investigation of the Wednesday attack at a suburban Virginia park, where shooter James Hodgkinson wounded several other people in addition to Scalise.

Mitchell's tweet joined what's become a customary firehose of social media posts and commentary: The Right blamed Democrats, arguing that anti-Trump rhetoric had inspired the actions of the suspected shooter, who had raged on social media about "destroying" the president and joined Facebook groups such as "Terminate the Republican Party".

President Donald Trump said in a taped message to the players and spectators that coming together for a ball game a day after a tragedy shows "the world that we will not be intimidated by assaults. on our democracy".

Colleagues who visited Scalise sounded generally upbeat, but spoke more in terms of hopes than the confident predictions of the immediate aftermath a day earlier.

Sen. Jeff Flake of Arizona, who was at Wednesday's practice and gave medical help after the shooting, said it would have "been awful" if the game had been canceled, and said Scalise would want it to go on. It was the second time members of Congress have been pictured praying for one another. "An attack on one of us is an attack on all of us", Ryan said, to prolonged applause. "So we all owe Steve a big, big thank you". The offices of both senators - Dick Durbin and Tammy Duckworth - turned over the emails to Capitol Police and declined to offer specifics about their content. Congressional aide Zack Barth, Tysons Food lobbyist Matt Mika and Capitol Police Officer David Bailey were also shot in the attack, but have since been released from the hospital.

There were 24,959 tickets sold, which was a record for the game that was first played in 1909.
