Deadlocked Bill Cosby jury instructed to resume deliberations Friday

Bill Cosby (R) arrives with aide Andrew Wyatt on the fourth day of jury deliberations in Cosby's sexual assault trial at the Montgomery County Courthouse on June 15, 2017 in Norristown, Pennsylvania. Judge Steve O'Neill ordered them back into their chamber to continue.

At 11:30 a.m. Thursday, the judge convened the court in order read a statement from the jury that had been written about half an hour earlier.

"While you should not hesitate to re-examine your own views and change your opinion if you are convinced that your opinion is erroneous, do not feel compelled to surrender your honest belief as to the weight or effect of the evidence exclusively because of the opinion of your fellow jurors, or for the mere goal of returning a verdict", O'Neill said. "But each of you must decide by yourself".

Wyatt added a note of caution, saying: "We just hope right now that these jurors are still being treated the way they should be treated - that no one will come in and try to have them change their decision, change heir thoughts, change their minds".

When the jury for the Bill Cosby trial on sexual offense charges was selected, the defense complained not enough minorities were seated.

O'Neill had the court reporter would read back for the jury the parts of Constand's testimony, both direct and cross-examination.

Tensions ran high on the Montgomery County Courthouse steps Thursday afternoon after news of the deadlocked jurors broke.

In the civil deposition, Cosby admitted that he had previously obtained prescriptions for Quaaludes, a powerful sedative, with the intention of giving the drugs to women with whom he wanted to have sex. At 9 p.m., they left the courtroom for the night. In most cases, the judge will simply tell the jury to keep deliberating and review the others' points of view. In numerous alleged incidents, the statute of limitations has expired.

"This is not the end", the attorney said.

"There's a misperception that there's a time limit", he said.

For four days and nearly 30 hours, the jurors for Bill Cosby's #Criminal Trial have been deliberating the accusations by Andrea Constand that she was sexually assaulted by Cosby in 2004. "The prosecution had a strong case, but the defense was able to show a lot of inconsistencies".

Several of the other women who accuse Cosby of molesting them are confronting a half-dozen supporters outside the courthouse. One, more upbeat, nodded along. "Second, there is likely disagreement on the panel, and so jurors are needing to discuss and debate their different perspectives".

He also has claimed that their physical contact was consensual.

The jurors will get back to work Saturday morning.

The members of the jury say they are deadlocked and "cannot come to a unanimous consensus on any of these counts". Juries are required to find a defendant guilty only if the evidence establishes it beyond a reasonable doubt. If nothing else, she says the case has revived debate about rape and consent. He did not testify during the trial, but Constand did, speaking publicly about the alleged incident for the first time as she stepped up to the witness stand last week (ends09Jun17).

"That's the question", said criminal lawyer Alan J. Tauber, who wasn't involved in the case.
