Cristiano Ronaldo Accused Of Being A Serious Tax Cheat


According to the prosecutor, a "shell company" in the Virgin Islands was used to hide Ronaldo's total earnings from the Spanish tax office.

"The Public Prosecutor has filed today a complaint against Cristiano Ronaldo and not a claim, which implies a substantial change", the statement on the company's official website read.

The Portuguese athlete, who plays for Spanish side Real Madrid, stands accused of trying to avoid paying more than $16 million in taxes between 2011 and 2014.

"There is no tax evasion scheme".

Ronaldo's representatives did not respond immediately to a request for comment. The prison term is expected to be suspended as is common in Spain for first offences for non-violent crimes carrying a sentence of less than two years.

The income related to Messi's image rights that was hidden includes endorsement deals with Danone, Adidas, Pepsi- Cola, Procter & Gamble and the Kuwait Food Company.

Ronaldo, 32, a four-time Ballon d'Or victor, is not the first high-profile footballer to find himself the target of legal action by the Spanish tax authorities. Earlier this month, he helped Real Madrid to their second-straight Champions League title.
