Trump tweets on obstruction of justice allegations: 'Witch hunt' and 'phony story'

"Nice", Trump tweeted Thursday.

The special counsel overseeing the investigation into Russia's role in the 2016 election is interviewing senior intelligence officials as part of a widening probe that now includes an examination of whether President Trump attempted to obstruct justice, officials said.

Last week, Comey told the Senate Intelligence Committee that the Federal Bureau of Investigation was not "personally investigating President Trump" while he was in charge of the department.

Former FBI Director James Comey, whom Trump abruptly fired last month, had reassured the president three times that he was not personally under investigation in the Russian Federation probe.

According to the report, Mueller has requested interviews with several high-level intelligence officials, including NSA director Mike Rogers, National Intelligence director Dan Coats, and CIA director Mike Pompeo.

The Post cited anonymous sources who were briefed on requests made by investigators.

He accused Mueller of setting up a "dragnet" of obstruction so that he could investigate every aspect of Trump's personal life and business associations.

The leaders of the Senate Intelligence committee said in a statement issued Wednesday that they "look forward to future engagements" with Robert Mueller.

After a series of contradictory explanations emanated from the White House, Trump admitted the firing was driven by his desire to ease up the investigation into his campaign, which he saw as a distraction to his administration.

It goes on to tell RNC members to say: "If this leaked account is true, it means the special counsel has struck out on trying to prove collusion and is shifting to obstruction in an effort to save face".

Comey was later sacked, with Trump acknowledging that the Russian investigation was on his mind when he chose to dismiss him. The focus on Trump does not necessarily mean that a case is being built against him, the New York Times noted .

The obstruction of justice investigation into Trump began days after Comey was sacked on May 9, the Post said. He declined further comment.

"It is my view that fully investigating the facts, circumstances, and rationale for Comey's removal will provide us the opportunity to do that on a cooperative, bipartisan basis".

Trump has regularly turned to Twitter to blast reports about his alleged connections to Russia or the inquiries into possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russian operatives.

Trump confidante Chris Ruddy said "terminating" the special counsel was under consideration. And I don't hate to tell you, that I told you so.

"I appointed him; I stand by that decision, " he said. California Sen. Dianne Feinstein, the panel's ranking Democrat, has called for an investigation into any possible obstruction by the President.
