Trump makes case for apprenticeships to fill jobs gap

There also are questions about oversight of apprenticeship programs that begin and operate nearly completely under the control of the company.

Donald Trump made his second visit to Wisconsin as president Tuesday afternoon - and discussed the importance of jobs and education during a speech at Waukesha County Technical College.

And so what you're seeing here at Waukesha County Technical College and the 15 other colleges like this across the state are really at the forefront. That's part of a broader effort to show Trump remains focused on his policy agenda despite cascading headlines about investigations into his campaign's ties to Russian Federation and the possibilities of acts of obstruction of justice.

"Many colleges and universities fail to help students graduate with the skills necessary to secure high-paying jobs in today's workforce", the order states.

"So we're empowering these companies, unions, industry groups, and federal agencies to go out and create new apprenticeships for millions of our citizens", Trump said.

But beyond funding, experts say that size and scale of what is required present their own challenges.

But while businesses are desperate for labor, there are still 1.7 million Americans among the long-term unemployed, 5.2 million employed part-time for economic reasons, and tens of millions more underemployed or out of the workforce altogether.

Another complication: Only about half of apprentices finish their multiyear programs, Lerman said.

He said that he has been pushing for decades to get these training opportunities extended into high schools, the way they are in countries like Germany and Switzerland, but that his efforts have been roundly defeated by those concerned that job-skills programs limit certain students' options.

He cited a Business Roundtable survey released just last week found that 95% of business executives reported trouble finding qualified workers. "Instead, apprentices earn while they learn".

21 signed a $1.8 million contract with the U.S. Department of Labor to launch the national Hospitality Sector Registered Apprenticeship project.

Companies have long complained that they can't find trained people to fill highly technical jobs, and apprenticeship programs have sprung up around the country. "I'm not saying [regulations] are the main driver of the low apprenticeship numbers in the United States", he says. But that number rose back up to 450,000 by a year ago, in part due to the bipartisan Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act. The task force will also assess whether the job-training programs now in place are even effective.

The president said the on-the-job training and earn-as-you-learn programs would prepare students for many rewarding careers, including high-tech jobs operating state-of-the-art machinery. It didn't place workers in jobs they wanted, and the jobs they did get often paid far less than their previous ones.

The Economist survey also asked Americans about their view of the interactions between Mr. Trump and James Comey, the former FBI director who testified before Congress last week after being fired by Mr. Trump amid an ongoing investigation into whether the Trump campaign colluded with Russian Federation.

Despite the checkered history, job training and apprenticeships appeared to turn the corner after Republicans and Democrats passed the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act in 2014. How can he call for better job training while cutting federal funding?

Some programs have had lots of success.

Apprenticeship Carolina, a state-run program, develops apprenticeship programs for employers at no cost for them.

Trump Decries 'Witch Hunt' After Report That Mueller Is Investigating Him
Gingrich and Ruddy said it would be a "mistake" for Trump to remove Mueller, although both said they see the probe as unnecessary. The Justice Department has maintained that it would be inappropriate to indict a sitting president.
