Bill Cosby jury deadlocked; judge orders them to continue deliberating

The 12-member panel announced their stalemate on day four of their deliberations in Norristown, Pennsylvania.

File- Bill Cosby leaves the Allegheny County Courthouse after jury selection was completed May 24th, 2017.

Defense lawyers at the trial emphasized discrepancies in Constand's statements to police in 2005 in an effort to undermine her credibility. It shows her shooting a mini-basketball into a hoop to the tune of "Sweet Georgia Brown", the theme song of the Harlem Globetrotters.

A message appears toward the end of the video: "Always follow through".

Cosby's defense attorney Brian McMonagle cited gifts and repeated phone calls - including several calls on Valentine's Day 2004 - between Cosby and Constand as proof of the woman's relationship with the former Temple trustee.

"This is an incredible jury that has just acted with incredible dignity and fidelity, . and I don't have any higher praise", Judge Stephen O'Neill told the panel before they broke for the night.

The comedian faces three charges of aggravated indecent assault.

Cosby, 79, stood and watched closely as the predominantly white jury of seven men and five women filed into the courtroom, most appearing tired and glum. But the atmosphere remains calm, with accusers and supporters even holding hands. He said she didn't show any ill effects from the medicine, nor did she object as he groped her.

During Constand's testimony, which lasted over two days, she described a night when she was at Cosby's house discussing her career plans. "It's different from the Jian Ghomeshi (trial) where it was judge-alone ... the jury is looking at the totality of the picture".

The sequestered jurors have appeared increasingly exhausted and upset after deliberating late into the night the past three days.

Constand denied there was any romance between them and told jurors she had rebuffed his advances before the assault. He says the encounter was consensual.

Constand's lawyer, Dolores Troiani, says only that the jury is "apparently working very hard" to reach agreement on the charges.

The sequestered jurors in Bill Cosby's sexual assault trial on Thursday said they deadlocked and could not come to a unanimous decision on whether the entertainer is guilty of drugging and abusing his accuser, Andrea Constand.

"We can not come to a unanimous consensus on any of these counts", the panel said in a note to the judge, according to NBC News.

There's also no rule on how many times the judge can send them back to deliberate again, so he may keep pushing them.

Though dozens of women have accused Cosby of sexual misconduct, only Constand's accusations led to criminal charges. On Wednesday, they reviewed Constand's testimony from the week before about the night of the alleged attack and also requested read-backs of police testimony about Cosby's 2005 interview with police.

Bill Cosby has arrived for the fourth day of jury deliberations in his sexual assault trial.

After the declaration of a mistrial, prosecutors may choose to retry the case with a different set of jurors, or they may cut their losses.

The jury resumed deliberating Wednesday morning with Cosby in the courthouse.

The trial outside Philadelphia involves Cosby's sexual encounter with a woman at his home in 2004.

Constand testified last week that she was paralyzed by the pills and unable to fight Cosby off.

The case is one of America's biggest celebrity trials in years. Despite the deadlock, the judge instructed the jurors to continue their deliberations to see if they could work out their differences and deliver a verdict.
