WH: Trump Has 'No Intention' of Firing Mueller

"I'm going to acknowledge we had a meeting with the special counsel Mueller, but I'm not going to get into the contests", Mark Warner, the ranking Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee, told reporters later.

"While the president has the right to, he has no intention to do so", White House Deputy Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders told reporters overseas Air Force One flying back from Wisconsin to Washington DC.

The talk about dismissing Mueller appeared to be coming from Trump allies - including some close to the White House strategist Steve Bannon - who are increasingly frustrated over the prospect of a long inquiry.

Ruddy said Mueller has some "conflicts" because his former law firm, Wilmer Hale, also represents Ivanka Trump, the president's daughter, and her husband Jared Kushner. "He had a private conversation with the President on his views about all sorts of matters, potentially about the investigation, I don't know".

"The Special Counsel may be disciplined or removed from office only by the personal action of the Attorney General", the Code of Federal Regulation states.

The real solution to this problem, if Trump's assertions of innocence are true, is not to fire the special counsel but rather to cooperate fully with him to insure the swift completion of his investigation.

Rosenstein's letter critical of Comey's handling of the Hillary Clinton email server investigation served as the Trump White House's first reasoning for firing Comey - though Trump later undercut that explanation by saying he fired Comey in hopes of ending the Russian Federation probe.

Trump can not directly dismiss Mueller. If Rosenstein declined, the task would then fall to acting solicitor general Jeffrey Wall.

Ryan said the smartest thing for the president to do would be to let the investigation continue and be vindicated. "He was preparing for the stop here today", said Sanders.

"I want a commitment from Jeff Sessions that he will not oppose those subpoenas on behalf of the president through the Justice Department".

Giving Mueller the ax would strongly evoke memories of the famous "Saturday Night Massacre" when Richard Nixon tried to fire Archibald Cox, a special prosecutor closing in on him in the Watergate scandal.

Quoting officials, the newspaper said one event of interest to Mueller is an exchange on March 22, when Coats told associates that Trump had asked him to intervene with Comey to get him to back off the focus on Trump's former national security advisor Mike Flynn as part of the Federal Bureau of Investigation probe of the Russian Federation affair.

Those questions were prompted after a friend of President Donald Trump said the White House was considering firing Mueller. Rosenstein responded: "No I have not".

White House press secretary Sean Spicer denied Ruddy's remarks, but his comments fueled most of the media narrative on Wednesday.
