They were dubbed a "lifeline" in helping to get people out of their flats even as fire alarms and sprinklers failed to work in the west London block, the daily reported.

Witnesses told how residents in the upper floors used their mobile phone torches to attract attention, before they disappeared from view, their screams of help falling silent.

The fire broke out in the 1970s-built, 24-story structure Tuesday night.

The Metropolitan Police said two people were being treated at the scene for smoke inhalation and cordons were in place.

Firefighters rescued 65 people from the building. The tower is owned by the local government in the borough of Kensington and Chelsea.

An investigation into the cause of the blaze, the worst in the British capital in a generation, was underway.

As she improbably took the title, Ostapenko's aggressive style of play further endeared her to the Roland Garros crowd. "Enjoy it. A reeling Halep surrendered the set when Ostapenko struck a blazing forehand victor down the line, to the crowd's approval.

Prime Minister Theresa May has promised a "proper investigation" after the building went up in flames amid growing concerns about how the blaze could have spread so rapidly.

Many people remained unaccounted for Thursday, and officials weren't sure exactly how many were missing.

"This awesome achievement was thanks to the support of hundreds, if not thousands, of local people who wanted to help another group of people in their time of need and grief", said local resident Phil Korklin, who organised the appeal with his wife Katie.

"Tragically now we are not expecting to find anyone else alive", she said.

"This is my neighbourhood I can't believe this is happening", she said".

Gurdwaras, mosques and churches opened their doors to the people rendered homeless, which included hundreds from nearby housing blocks that were evacuated as a precautionary measure.

His brother Michael told The New York Times that "he wasn't happy with the way things were going, the election results and stuff". Jeff Duncan of SC said he had just left the practice and encountered the apparent gunman in the parking lot before the shooting.

London Fire Brigade chief Dany Cotton, who said the fire had been unprecedented in its scale, said urban search units backed by specialist dog teams would slowly make their way through the building as structural surveyors helped make the tower safe.

Fundraising campaigns set up online in the wake of the Grenfell Tower block fire have raised more than £1m of donations to help those who lost everything in the tragedy.

May moved quickly to establish exactly what caused the fire - and why it moved so quickly, engulfing the building that housed as many as 600 people in less than an hour.

Adele is showing her support for everyone affected by the deadly fire at London's Grenfell Tower.

Harley Facades, which fitted the panels, told the BBC: "At this time, we are not aware of any link between the fire and the exterior cladding to the tower".

Authorities say the death toll is expected to rise as emergency workers sift through more of the wreckage on Thursday.

Laminated signs bearing the phone number for a missing persons' hotline were tied to a fence, along with a handwritten sign reading, "Breakfast from 0800 (GMT) inside". So much food, clothing, shoes and other items have been coming in that the centers, churches and mosques have had to start turning away new donations. "Thank you for all you did today, and all the other days", one Twitter user posted.
