Reactions to Jeff Sessions' Testimony on Trump and Russia

US President Donald Trump is under investigation for possible obstruction of justice by Robert Mueller, the special counsel examining Russias interference in the 2016 election, a media report said. Trump later repeated that request to other White House officials involved with the investigation.

He told members the committee that the deputy attorney general has appointed a special counsel to investigate the matters related to the Russian interference in the 2016 election.

The White House has been directing all questions related to this to Trump's personal attorney Marc Kasowitz.

Mr Sessions declined to comment, stating only that he had "confidence" in Mr Mueller.

Comey told the Senate Intelligence Committee on June 8 he believed Trump had directed him in February to drop an FBI probe into former national security adviser, Michael Flynn, that was part of the broader Russian Federation investigation. But one not entirely shocking, considering the taboos and norms that have already been breached in Washington since the new president took office.

While a sitting president is unlikely to face criminal prosecution, obstruction of justice could form the basis for impeachment.

During a Senate Intelligence Committee hearing last week, former FBI Director James Comey testified that President Trump sought assurances that he was not under investigation personally in the agency's Russian Federation tampering investigation.

"The thing that drives this whole thing, and that you just can't overlook the importance of it, is that Russian Federation sought out to interfere with our election", Stewart said.

Trump is not the first president to be subjected to a special counsel investigation, nor the first president to protest it.

Democratic senators on Tuesday were left infuriated as Attorney General Jeff Sessions repeatedly thwarted their efforts to shed light on the firing of former Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation James Comey.

The move suggested Mueller is examining whether Trump sought their help in trying to get former FBI chief James Comey to end an investigation into Michael T. Flynn, the former National Security Adviser.

"I believe it was the next day that [Comey] said something, expressed concern, about being left alone with the president", Sessions said. But investigators began probing Trump for obstruction of justice soon after Comey's termination.

Grassley on Tuesday stopped short of ruling out establishing a congressional investigation into the question of whether Trump obstructed justice.
