Flames and smoke billow as firefighters deal with a serious fire in a tower block at Latimer Road in West London, Britain June 14, 2017.

Eyewitnesses described people trapped in the burning Grenfell Tower, in north Kensington, screaming for help and yelling for their children to be saved.

After she escaped along with her husband and son, 16, and daughter, eight, she called her brother, who lives on the 21st floor, to see if he was all right.

"I shut my bedroom windows", said Adam Efendi Nordin an operations consultant with the accounting firm Ernst and Young.

Residents in Grenfell Tower had previously been advised to stay inside their flats in the event of a fire, and Ikhwan Razali, a fire engineer with Tenable understands why.

Nick Paget-Brown, the leader of Kensington and Chelsea Council, told Sky News there could have been several hundred residents in the building around the time the fire broke out.

A witness said she saw a member of the public catch a baby that was dropped from the burning tower.

Survivors said they saw the flames outside their windows, rising up the exterior of the building, which had recently been covered in cladding during a major refurbishment finished past year.

"I heard shouting, 'It's getting bigger, it's getting bigger!'", he told CNN Wednesday.

Built in 1974, Grenfell Tower was recently refurbished at a cost of £8.6 million, with work completed in May past year. "Also, the new front doors for each flat can withstand a fire for up to 30 minutes, which gives plenty of time for the fire brigade to arrive".

The mayor of London Sadiq Khan has now stated that "there will be a great many questions over the coming days as to the cause of this tradgedy". "I'm standing here in everything I've got".

The group says on its blog that it has raised concerns about testing and maintenance of firefighting equipment and blocked emergency access to the site.

The investigation into the causes of the Grenfell fire and whether there was any wrongdoing by any party is ongoing.

Rydon completed a refurbishment of the building in the summer of 2016 for KCTMO (Kensington and Chelsea Tenant Management Organisation) on behalf of the Council, which met all required building control, fire regulation and health & safety standards.
