United Kingdom election: Brexit plans in disarray

British Prime Minister Theresa May suffered a further setback Sunday in her efforts to stay in power after Dublin warned that her plans to form an alliance with a Northern Irish party could upset the province's fragile peace.

He wrote on the ConservativeHome site: "The reason for the disappointing result was not the absence of support for Theresa May and the Conservatives but an unexpected surge in support for Labour".

LONDON-The two top aides to British Prime Minister Theresa May resigned Saturday, shouldering some of the blame for an election that proved a disaster for the Conservative Party, a headache for Britain's exit from the European Union - and potentially a fatal blow to May's premiership. Her weakened position in the party rules out big changes, and May's office has said that the most senior Cabinet members - including Treasury chief Philip Hammond, Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson and Home Secretary Amber Rudd - will keep their jobs, but she is expected to shuffle the lower ranks of ministers.

A senior Conservative lawmaker was in Belfast on Saturday for talks with Northern Ireland's Democratic Unionist Party (DUP), whose 10 seats in the new parliament could give May just enough support to pass legislation. The negotiations had been due to start around June 19.

The news came as May prepared to name the rest of her cabinet, after revealing on Friday that her five most senior ministers would remain in their posts.

May's miscalculation in calling this election harks back to an earlier blunder by her immediate predecessor: former Prime Minister David Cameron and his decision to hold a referendum on "Brexit" in the first place. The DUP is a socially conservative pro-British Protestant group that opposes abortion and same-sex marriage and once appointed an environment minister who believes human-driven climate change is a myth.

Scottish Conservative leader Ruth Davidson, who took the party from one Scottish seat to 13, said there would now have to be "consensus within the country about what it means and what we seek to achieve as we leave".

Kingdom and those who want it to become part of the Republic of Ireland.

"I just can't see how she can continue in any long-term way".

A source close to the DUP said the party was seeking more funding for the province and concessions for former British soldiers in exchange for supporting Mrs May.

Italy's local elections deal a heavy blow for populist Five Star Movement
Until last week, Italy's main parties had been trying to pass a new proportional electoral law together, but the deal unraveled . Analysts said the party was punished, in part, for its poor track record in Rome, after winning elections there last summer.

Ghany opined no. He said if May had been forced to resign this might have been the case, but as it is, she had got the Queen's permission to form a minority government, and is also getting interim stability from the DUP.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said she assumed Britain still wanted to leave the European Union and talks should start quickly.

"I must tell you, my friends, you who have waited faithfully for the punchline of this speech, that having consulted colleagues and in view of the circumstances in parliament I have concluded that person [the next Tory leader] can not be me".

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn says he can "still be prime minister" as he aims to thwart Theresa May's attempt to run a minority government.

The Times newspaper's front page declared "May stares into the abyss".
