Theresa May to Remain PM Despite Calls to Go

It's happened again: The leader of a mainstream party was given favorable election odds, ran a poor campaign, got trounced on social media and was taught a painful lesson by voters.

"What I'm doing now is actually getting on with the immediate job. I would have thought that's enough".

"I asked for a categoric assurance that if any deal or scoping deal was done with the DUP there would be absolutely no rescission of LGBTI rights in the rest of the United Kingdom, in Great Britain, and that we would use any influence that we had to advance LGBTI rights in Northern Ireland", said the MP, who is a lesbian. "I believe that's important".

After winning her parliamentary seat, May said on Friday her Conservative Party would take responsibility for delivering stability if it won the most seats in the election.

The SNP, which had called for a new independence referendum, lost 21 of the 56 seats it won in 2015, losing voters anxious by the prospect of a second divisive plebiscite.

At the beginning of the campaign it had been assumed Mr Corbyn was a lame duck, who would be forced to quit as leader following a humiliating defeat by the Tories. While Labour supports maintaining a nuclear deterrent, Corbyn has in the past voted against funding for Britain's Trident missile system.

After confirming on Friday that her top five ministers would keep their jobs, including finance minister Philip Hammond, May is expected to continue to appoint the government that will take on one of the most demanding negotiations in British history.

In another sign of the dangers facing Ms May, Sunday papers reported that Boris Johnson was either being encouraged to make a leadership bid in an effort to oust her, or actually preparing one - a claim dismissed as "tripe" by the Foreign Secretary.

May's pitch to the eurosceptic right wing of the Conservative Party has nudged Britain closer to a "hard Brexit", in which it may cut ties with Brussels at the cost of damaging itself economically by losing access to the lucrative single European market, say analysts.

The result also prompted criticism of May from within her own ranks as well as from the Opposition.

"We're in another mess again, and probably we're going to have to have another election, and it's all such a waste of time at the end of the day", said 85-year-old Londoner Patricia Nastri. The Conservatives "have lost their majority and the prime minister has lost all authority and credibility", said Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon.

He also said power-sharing talks between Sinn Fein and the DUP in Northern Ireland would be unaffected by the Conservatives' reliance on the unionist party at Westminster.

Under the confidence and supply deal, the DUP would not have any of its MPs become government or cabinet ministers but would support Conservative legislation on a case-by-case basis.

It was suspended in January when Sinn Fein withdrew from the agreement and said it would refuse to work with the DUP while First Minister Arlene Foster remained in her post.

A later statement said d no deal had been finalised.

The arrangement with the DUP will make governing easier, but it makes some Conservatives uneasy.

He added: "If, for example, London were to remain in a customs union, it would not have to renegotiate all trade agreements".

As it stands now, Labour has successfully stolen the Tory parliamentary majority.

Conservative legislator Nigel Evans said the departure of the two aides was "a start", but there needed to be changes to the way the government functioned in the wake of the campaign.
