ISIS has claimed responsibility for the suicide bombings and gun attacks on the Iranian parliament and the mausoleum of Ayatollah Khomeini on Wednesday that left 17 people dead and around 50 injured.

Ali Larijani, the speaker of Iran's parliament, also spoke out ahead of the funerals.

"The mastermind and main commander of the attacks on Parliament and the mausoleum of Ayatollah Khomeini was killed", Iran's Intelligence Minister Mahmud Alavi said in a televised programme on Saturday night.

They were supposed to be screened at International Documentary and Short Film Festival of Kerala , which begins on June 16. He opined that it clearly shows there exists cultural emergency and we are going through undeclared emergency period.


The attacks came at a particularly charged time in the region, days after Riyadh and other Sunni Muslim powers cut ties with Qatar, accusing it of backing Tehran and militant groups. The fact that the attackers are in all likelihood Iranian Kurds, Sunnis from inside the country, is a source of concern, one analyst said.

Iranian security officials counter that it is their regional rival Saudi Arabia - a close United States ally - that is responsible for funding and spreading the extremism that underpins IS.

Also, just hours before the deadly attacks in Tehran, the Saudi Foreign Minister Adel Al-Jubeir had claimed that Iran was the world's leading supporter of terrorism and must be punished. Intelligence officials later stated that they thwarted a third attack.

The intelligence ministry said the attacks were carried out by five Iranian men who had joined IS and travelled to their bastions in Iraq and Syria before returning home.
