Scottish SNP Lost Votes Due to Plans to Hold New Independence Referendum

The Tories increased their tally to 13, compared with 7 for Labour and 4 for the Liberal Democrats.

Labour also won a series of unexpected gains, including Glasgow North East, as the surge in support for Jeremy Corbyn spread north of the border.

The result saw 35 seats secured by the SNP, 13 for the Tories, seven for Labour and four for the Liberal Democrats, which meant the SNP lost almost half a million votes compared with 2015, while the Tories won an additional 300,000-plus.

The SNP still took 35 of Scotland's 59 seats in Britain's 650-seat national parliament, while the Conservatives won 13 Scottish seats, achieving the second largest share of the vote.

Back in 2015, Nicola Sturgeon's party only missed out on three Scottish seats.

Labour's Gerard Killen, who won in Rutherglen and Hamilton West over nationalist Margaret Ferrier, said voters had rejected a return to the issue of Scottish self-determination.

While May likely overestimated Britons' commitment to the hard Brexit she has advocated, Sturgeon likely underestimated such a commitment for Scotland.
