May looks to form new government

"The party that has lost in this election is the Conservative Party".

She inherited a 17-seat majority in the Commons, but called the snap vote to take advantage of opinion polls putting her on course for a landslide.

The party, which gained two seats in the election to hold 10 altogether, has not yet outlined what it might want from a formal deal with the Tories, but the prime minister said in her speech outside Downing Street that she could rely on her "friends and allies" from the DUP.

"While the United Kingdom has decided that it no longer wants to be part of the European Union political project, we still desire a positive relationship, mutual access to our markets to pursue common interests", the DUP says in its manifesto.

"So let's not kid ourselves". Negotiations with the European Union are scheduled to begin later this month.

A Nottingham political expert has called Theresa May's political campaign the "most disastrous by a party leader since 1983".

If all this uncertainty weren't enough, the Labour Party, which won 261 seats in the election, has its own divisions to deal with. May's gamble in calling an early election backfired spectacularly, as her Conservative Party lost its majority in Parliament.

In the 2015 election, Amber Rudd won the Hastings and Rye seat in southern England by nearly 5,000 votes.

The broadcasters' exit poll, which historically has been very close to the actual result, suggested the United Kingdom is heading for a hung parliament, with the Conservatives the largest single party in the House of Commons but 12 seats short of the 326 they need for an absolute majority.
