Internet users in India to double by 2021: Cisco

That figure is even higher for North America, which is expected to see a stunning 181 GB of internet traffic per user across their devices in 2021.

The number of DDoS attacks grew 172 percent in 2016 and will increase 2.5-fold to 3.1 million by 2021 globally.

As the number of Internet users increases, and broadband connectivity becomes more pervasive, the amount of video and virtual reality consumed is growing by leaps and bounds. IP traffic is expected to increase four times in the next four years as internet-enabled devices will shoot up to 2 billion in 2021. They'll account for more than half of 27.1 billion devices and connections, Cisco projects.

As present trends indicate, video will continue to drive traffic in the country. Playing a larger role in all this will be live internet video-such as streaming of TV apps and personal live streaming on social networks-which will see 15-fold growth and hit 13 percent of internet video traffic by 2021. The consumption rate as well as quality will increase in the next five years.

India will reach 84 billion internet video minutes per month by 2021, which is one hundred and sixty thousand years of video per month, or about thirty two thousand video minutes every second, it explained.

The demand is coming from all types of internet video, including on-demand content like Netflix, web cam viewing and traditional TV options available over the internet (IP VOD).

"Mobile networks, devices and connections in India are not only getting smarter in their computing capabilities but are also evolving from lower-generation network connectivity (2G) to higher-generation network connectivity (3G, 3.5G, and 4G or LTE)", said Sanjay Kaul India Head of Cisco.

Globally, 23 percent of Internet traffic will be carried on regional backbones (without touching cross-country backbones) by 2021, compared to 20 percent in 2016. Wi-Fi hotspots will also see a huge growth worldwide, with 526.2 million units estimated to be in the wild by Cisco's deadline - with China, the United States and Japan all expected to lead the way.

The HomePod will take Siri from iPhones into more homes and turn it into more of a hub for Apple's other products and services. Despite Amazon's dominance, the smart speaker market is still considered a worthwhile investment due to its growth prospects.

Total global IP traffic is also expected to reach an annual run rate of 3.3 zettabytes by 2021, up from 1.2 zettabytes in 2016.

He added "We are witnessing a burgeoning rise in usage of mobile applications and connectivity by end users".

As traffic continue to grow overall, "network and security will be essential to support the future of the Internet", said Yvette Kanouff, senior vice president and general manager for Cisco's Service Provider Business, in the release. "Many providers have also started field trials for 5G and are gearing towards rolling out 5G deployments towards the end of the VNI forecast period".
