General Election 2017: SNP losses in Scotland as vote share slumps

The Conservatives are aiming to make gains in areas including the Borders and North East Scotland - with the SNP's depute leader Angus Robertson in Moray among the big hitters the party hopes to topple.

Sturgeon put a positive spin on the losses - which saw her party reduced to to just 35 MPs across Scotland - arguing the SNP was still the third-largest party in parliament and as such would have a role to play. The pollsters caution that there is a lot of uncertainty around the forecast.

While May looked set to fail in her bid for an increased majority, results suggest her Conservatives had by far their best result in Scotland for more than two decades.

In the election debate on Tuesday, Ms Sturgeon said the Scottish Labour leader had told her the vote for Brexit in June 2016 "changed everything" and "Labour should stop opposing a referendum".

"Send Nicola Sturgeon a message to drop her plans for a divisive second independence referendum".

The SNP lynchpin and ex-party leader was defeated by Colin Clark in Gordon.

The Liberal Democrats, meanwhile, took an additional two seats.

Scottish Conservative leader Ruth Davidson accuses Nicola Sturgeon of being a snitch for sharing details of a conversation with Kezia Dugdale about support for another Scottish referendum.

Emily Thornberry, Labour's shadow foreign secretary, accused Mrs May of "hubris" in calling the election, saying: "I think we're on a verge of a great result".

The Tories won the region of Angus from the SNP, previously among one of the nationalists' safer seats.

The SNP is defending 56 seats it won in the 2015 General election.

Mr Robertson, who had been the SNP's leader at Westminster, had been defending a majority of more than 9,000 but he was felled by Conservative Douglas Ross.

French President Emmanuel Macron has also reached out to Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Iran in a bid to kick off negotiations. Qatar has previously said it would "not surrender" to outside influences on its foreign policies.

"Nicola Sturgeon wants a referendum in 16 months' time".

The Tories picked up one of their top target seats, with former MSP John Lamont defeating the SNP's Calum Ross to win Berwickshire, Roxburgh and Selkirk.

The Conservatives have exploited this ambiguity to warn of a "coalition of chaos" between Labour and the SNP, resurrecting their vote-winning rhetoric from 2015 in which Corbyn's predecessor Ed Miliband was portrayed as being in the SNP's pocket.

Scottish Labour leader Kezia Dugdale said the country was "in touching distance of a Labour government - and people across Scotland need to get out and vote for it".
