During Comey testimony, Trump addresses religious group

Trump later contradicted his own staff and acknowledged on May 11 he fired Comey because of the Russian Federation probe.

Comey said Trump himself called him to a dinner on 27 January, during which he asked him for a pledge of loyalty.

As CBS2's Dick Brennan reported, Comey described a meeting with President Trump in which Comey said he asked the FBI director to drop an investigation of former NSA director Michael Flynn.

"I was honestly concerned that he might lie" about what they talked about, Comey said.

Comey said it is the "high confident judgment" of the USA intelligence community that Russian Federation interfered in the 2016 campaign. He strongly suggested that federal authorities investigate Comey's leaks, although the memo that Comey gave to a friend was not classified and was turned over after he was sacked. He also excoriated Comey for leaking to the press. Comey's disclosure that the person who leaked his memos of meeting with Trump was a Columbia Law School professor led to a stampede on the school's website, causing it to crash. He said during his years as the FBI Director this was the first president he felt it was necessary to have a log on what was discussed. The Times ran a story about the memo contents later that day.

At its heart, the hearing raised a profound question about President Trump: Was he trying to obstruct justice amid an investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election and possible collaboration between Trump associates and Russian officials, or was he simply unaware of what a president should or should not do?

The White House said Kasowitz would make a statement about Comey's testimony after he finishes.

Trump's elder son was active on Twitter, however, defending his dad.

During more than two hours of testimony, Comey told the Senate Intelligence Committee he believed Trump had directed him to drop an FBI probe into the Republican president's former national security adviser Michael Flynn as part of the broader Russian Federation investigation.

"Hoping and telling are two very different things", the younger Trump tweeted.

Feinstein: Did you tell anyone?

After Comey was sacked, White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders claimed she had talked to "countless" Federal Bureau of Investigation agents, and that "the rank and file of the Federal Bureau of Investigation had lost confidence in their director".

Trump repeatedly announced that Comey had told him that he was not personally under investigation but, prior to Thursday morning's testimony, Comey had never confirmed that Trump was being truthful about the lack of an investigation.

When did Comey take Trump at his word?

"I think it's unusual he had met with other presidents on one on one basis and didn't write anything down".

Comey accused Trump of lying in multiple instances in the hearing.

"It is time to put a stop to the attacks on religion", he declared, at the Faith and Freedom Coalition (FFC) at the "Road to Majority Conference" in D.C. When bad bosses take us by surprise, few people respond in the way they might hope. Had Comey detected such an attempt - and as an experienced former United States attorney, few people are better suited to determine whether Trump's conduct violated federal law - Comey would have been obligated to inform the attorney general. We will come out bigger and better and stronger than ever. The fresh hits to his credibility can only further hobble the White House's economic agenda.

"The president's new at this", Speaker Ryan told reporters Thursday. He's new to government. "So he probably wasn't steeped in the long-running protocols that establish the relationships". But Comey did not offer such a conclusion, and was not expected to.

"Why did he kick everybody out of the Oval Office" before raising the Flynn investigation, if the president's intent was innocent?
