Comey testimony raises questions over Trump acts amid Russia probe

The truth is more complex. Investigators and the public will have to decide whether they believe Trump, who lies all the time, or Comey, who has a flair for the dramatic but also the bearing of an oversized Boy Scout. "We also were aware of facts that I can't discuss in an open setting that would make his continued engagement in a Russia-related investigation problematic".

Kasowitz pushed back on parts of Comey's testimony, claiming Thursday that Trump did not pressure Comey to drop the Flynn investigation and did not ask for loyalty from the former FBI director.

Kasowitz also accused Comey of disclosing privileged communications with the president to the news media, without authorization. In the broadest terms, either Comey perjured himself in front of Congress or his characterization of those conversations is accurate.

Robert Mueller, who served as FBI director for the Bush and Obama administrations from 2001 to 2013, has been appointed as a special counsel to oversee the investigation into the Russian Federation probe.

But he was brutally clear about his discomfort with the circumstances, alleging Mr Trump deliberately dismissed others from the office so they could have a private conversation.

In almost three hours of dramatic testimony, Comey said he believed that the president directed him to abandon the probe of Michael Flynn, the former national security adviser, and "lift the cloud" of the broader investigation into whether the Trump campaign colluded with Russian officials by publicly clearing Trump's name.

UK general election: Voters to go to the polls today
May was criticized for lackluster campaigning and two deadly attacks turned the election into a debate about national security. Around 30 million voters are going to the polls in the General Election called by Theresa May just over seven weeks ago.

He expressed confidence that the circumstances of his firing, and Mr Trump's overall behaviour towards him, could be investigated by special counsel Robert Mueller for possible obstruction of justice, but he declined to offer an opinion on whether it met the threshold.

Whether Trump's request meets the threshold of obstruction of justice will be decided another day, but it remains the central question as the drama of the day receded. Barring new evidence, it arguably does not.

"There are so many questions that Mr. Comey's testimony leaves hanging out there".

He also said that he believed he had been fired by the president because of his handling of the Russian investigation.

"(But) on May 9, when I learned that I had been fired, for that reason, I immediately came home as a private citizen", he said.

The president and his outside counsel would apparently have us believe that the former Federal Bureau of Investigation director perjured himself yesterday, committing a felony with false testimony.

Did Russia interfere in the 2016 elections? No doubt, Comey says
Asked why he didn't just come forward, Comey compared reporters to "seagulls" (not exactly flattering, but perhaps accurate). Catherine Cortez Masto, D-Nev., said Comey's testimony "reiterates the importance of the ongoing independent investigation".

The Republican president stopped short of saying that Comey lied under oath.

"I don't think it's for me to say whether the conversation I had with the president was an effort to obstruct". "I hope you can let this go", Comey reported the president as saying in a February 14 meeting.

"I was honestly concerned he might lie about the nature of our meeting".

While Trump's staunchest supporters have tried to paint Comey's testimony as vindication for the president, few Republicans who don't work for Trump stepped in to defend the president's version of his contacts with Comey.

At one point, Comey said, "I've seen the tweet about tapes".

US President Donald Trump's personal lawyer plans to file a complaint over memos shared by former FBI Director James Comey about his conversations with the president, US broadcaster CNN has reported. However, Vladeck argued that Comey's leak could not fall under that law because "the memo has no pecuniary value".
