Apple announces workstation-class iMac Pro


With a whopping US$4,999 price tag, Apple aims to deliver a premium performance with the device. Featuring a new next-generation compute core and up to 16GB of on-package high-bandwidth memory (HBM2), iMac Pro with the Vega GPU delivers up to an fantastic 11 Teraflops of single precision compute power for real-time 3D rendering and immersive, high-frame rate VR. iMac Pro also supports up to 4TB of SSD and up to 128GB of ECC memory, with four Thunderbolt 3 ports. With the Space Gray MacBook Pros in mind, it's somewhat odd that Apple isn't offering its Space Gray accessories separately.

Apple used its Worldwide Developer Conference keynote event to show off new iMac models with Intel Kaby Lake processors and up to 64 GB RAM.

Thanks to an all-new thermal design, as well as an all-flash architecture, the iMac Pro can deliver up to 80% more cooling capacity in the familiar iMac form factor. With the Kaby Lake, the 13-inch MacBook Pro now runs on 3.5 GHz Core i7 with Turbo Boost of up to 4.0 GHz.

Pricing starts at US$1,299 for the new models.

The display is 43 percent brighter at 500 nits to a more visually immersive experience. Also, the newly refreshed MacBook measures just 13.1 mm in thickness. There's a single line about the MacBook Air in Apple's press release: "Apple today also updated the 13-inch MacBook Air with a 1.8 GHz processor".

For one, there's the just-announced iMac Pro, which will be available with AMD's new Radeon Vega graphics - and up to a ridiculous new 18-core CPU. The iMac Pro supports up to 4TB of SSD and up to 128GB of ECC memory. It now also has higher-end discrete graphics, with either the 2GB AMD Radeon Pro 555 or the 4GB Radeon Pro 560.
